  57. I've narrowed my choice of a new rig to either the Yaesu FT-990 or the
  58. Kenwood TS-850.  My interests right now are both ragchewing and DXing using
  59. both CW and SSB.

  61. I've read the reviews, etc., and would like any input you have about the
  62. performance of these rigs.  If you have had a chance to use both of these
  63. rigs, a comparison would be great!

  96. I have a 6 year old Yeasu 767GX and the internal lithium memory keep
  97. alive battery has run down.  Does anyone know what kind of battery it
  98. takes and how to go about replacing it?  The manual doesn't say.

  111. Well, at very least, _you_ seem to be out to get him, or at least,
  112. you message carried some rather nasty overtones that I doubt reflect
  113. the way you'd really like us all to think of you -- or the way I
  114. imagine you'd like people to think of hams.

  116. People have all sorts of reasons for wanting anonymity.  You don't
  117. even know if this message was from here in the U.S., and certainly
  118. I'd guess you'll concede that even if our government plays by the
  119. rules most of time, there are occasionally some spectacular lapses, and
  120. if you look outside the US, often, anything goes.

  122. Seems to me that if you're unable or unwilling to offer the assistance
  123. requested, that simply ignoring the request would be sufficient.  Or
  124. if you'd be willing to help, but only under certain conditions (e.g.,
  125. that the group requesting assistance disclose in private email the
  126. necessary facts to satisfy you) then say so and be done with it.

  129. agree.  I just don't believe this post reflects your true attitudes.

  168. I have a Yaesu FT-5100 that I have had for a couple of months. 
  169. After going through a couple of SWR/PWR meters that I thought were
  170. defective, I am beginning to think there might actually be a problem
  171. with my radio.  
  172.  
  173. Using a couple of different meters, I consistently measure very low
  174. power-- maybe 200 mW when it should be putting out 50 W.  I find it 
  175. difficult to believe that is all the power the unit is putting out
  176. (on 2 m) but that's what the meter says.  No one complains about my 
  177. audio quality and my PC screen even cants a little when I key the 
  178. mike on high power.  However, the reading remains.  The only thing
  179. I could have possibly done to the radio is key the mike without the
  180. antenna attached-- this is bad, I'm sure, but would it necessarily 
  181. be fatal?  Could I still be putting out a signal with reduced power
  182. or would the failure be catastrophic?

  184. Now I ask, is there any way that I could screw up using the SWR 
  185. meter?  I mean it's not Big Science.

  204. Well, indeed there is a failure mode where you would be putting
  205. out a couple hundred mills. First thing to test is if your power
  206. supply is delivering 10 amps or more on full power xmit. Then,
  207. get someones known working power meter and cables.  You could also
  208. do a de-facto test and A-B the mobile against an HT connected into the
  209. same antenna..running at low power. Compare your quieting into the
  210. repeater with different power settings on the HT and match it to the
  211. quieting on the mobil.
  212. If you do find out that you are generating 200MW, there is a great
  213. chance that your modular power amp in the Yaesu is fried.

  226. Does anyone have a list of undocumented features and mods for the
  227. TH78A/E.  I have read reviews stating that it is capable of wide
  228. band reception, however mine is limited to amateur band FM only.
  229. Interestingly, there appears to be AM reception capacity within
  230. the circuit diagram.

  250. I beg to differ! I'm quite pleased with the reliability of
  251. my FT-990 <knock-knock on the wood! :-> 'cause so far it
  252. didn't give me a single problem, nor to anybody of my
  253. friends, who seeing my 990 chose to buy similar rig
  254. for themselves.
